SWITCHFOOT, Grammy-nominated band from San Diego Volunteer on Habitat for
Humanity Build Site
San Diego’s own Switchfoot rocked with instruments of a different kind as they helped build homes with San Diego Habitat for Humanity on September 28th in their hometown.
The build helped kick off the band’s “Appetite for Construction” tour, a 30-city tour that also will help people in need of safe, decent, affordable housing realize the dream of homeownership. Switchfoot is teaming up with their good friends from Ohio, Relient K, to donate $1 from each ticket sold to benefit Habitat for Humanity.
Jimmie
Johnson Foundation raises over 500,000 for
San Diego Habitat
for Humanity!!
Jimmie Johnson returned to his hometown this week for fundraising events highlighted by the Jimmie Johnson Foundation Inaugural Golf Tournament on Wednesday, August 29. Initial fundraising totals are expected to exceed $500,000. “Chandra and I are blown away,” said Johnson. “We are still working on the final numbers but we have definitely exceeded our fundraising goal.”
NASCAR drivers Juan Pablo Montoya, Boris Said, Brian Vickers, Kyle Petty and Bobby Labonte joined singer/actor Nick Lachey and more than 200 other golfers Wednesday at Riverwalk Golf Club in San Diego for the inaugural golf tournament hosted by the Nextel Cup champion and his wife Chandra.
A dinner and live auction were held the previous evening and raised more than $200,000. J Records recording artist Gavin DeGraw also performed at the dinner, held at The Prado at Balboa Park. Some of the items up for bid at the live auction included a Jeff Gordon fire suit and Johnson’s race worn helmet, both receiving winning bids of more than $20,000.
“The dinner was awesome,” said Johnson. “Chani and our staff did a great job creating a nice setting and Gavin really added to the evening. I couldn’t believe some of the bidding that was going on.”
The events concluded on Thursday as the Johnsons, Robert Niblock, Chairman and CEO of Lowe’s, and Cheryl Keenan, Executive Director of San Diego Habitat for Humanity, ceremoniously raised the wall of the Habitat for Humanity home that will be built using funds from the golf tournament.
The site is located in El Cajon and the Johnsons hope that the amount raised through the week’s events will fund construction of at least two homes on the site.
“We’ll have to wait and see, but it looks like we will be able to do much more for the community than we originally thought,” said Johnson. “It was an incredible week, and all I can say to everyone who helped us is- thank you.”
Architectural Concepts 15TH
ANNIVERSARY celebration raises $18,000 for a Habitat for Humanity
family
Architectural Concepts celebrated its 15th Anniversary by hosting
the “Lemon Drop3 Party”, a benefit for San Diego Habitat
for Humanity on Friday, May 18. The highlight auction item of the
evening was a week’s stay at the world renowned Golden Door
Resort and Spa valued at $8,000. Margit Whitlock, AIA, principal,
said “We are proud the funds will help provide for a family
that could not otherwise realize the dream of owning a home. By pure
coincidence, the father of the Orozco family who the fundraiser was
for is an employee of The Golden Door, a resort and spa in Escondido.
We marked Architectural Concepts’ 15th Anniversary by giving
back to a community that has been so good to us. We are committed
to making dreams into reality or our clients and are proud to be
making a difference for the Orozcos.” The Golden Door Resort
will further support Habitat’s mission by volunteering on a
Habitat Build Day with the Orozco family in August.
