Where do you build houses?
We build houses throughout San Diego County, wherever we can get land donated or sold to us at an affordable price. Property must be affordable, available, and "building-friendly." We have to select our lots carefully. If a lot requires significant improvement such as extensive grading, retaining walls, public improvements, a sewer line connection, etc., the cost of the project rises above our budget and that which families are able to afford. This year we have building projects in Carlsbad and plan to begin construction in the coming months in Oceanside, El Cajon, National City and Vista.
What are the houses like?
A standard house is about 1100 -1300 square feet with 3 bedrooms and a full bathroom. Four bedroom houses are constructed if family size meets certain criteria set by Habitat. Habitat provides new appliances and landscapes the front yard.
Do your refurbish homes?
Occasionally, however there can often be problems which are expensive to fix, some of which may not be discovered until after the purchase.
How long does it take to build a Habitat house?
It normally takes 8 to 10 months to build a house. Remember, our homes are built by volunteers. The skill of the volunteers and the availability of volunteers can have an impact on the time it takes to build a home. The exception was our 2006 Blitz Build where we built four homes in five days in Escondido with the help of John Laing Homes, KB Home, and Smith Brothers Construction.
How many homes are available?
We anticipate building 45 more homes over the next few years! |
